On large standby diesels the standard hardware is a tank-style circulation heater: a steel tank with an immersion element, plumbed into the cooling system with a cold inlet low on the block and a hot outlet higher up. Smaller sets often use a freeze plug or immersion element that threads directly into the block, or a hose-type heater spliced into a coolant line.

Two details matter more than the hardware style. First, the heater runs on the normal electrical supply, not the generator’s own output, so its circuit must stay live when the genset is off. Put it on a breaker that drops out with the utility and it does nothing on the night you need it. Second, a block heater heats المبرد, not oil. Most sizing advice gives you a table and stops. The table is the answer; the reasoning is what lets you check it.

The heater has one job at equilibrium: replace the heat the engine loses to the air around it, at the coldest temperature the site will see. When NFPA 110 Requires a Block Heater

Preheat is not optional on all sites, and the code is specific about where it applies. The requirement sits in NFPA 110 §7.2.3, in the equipment provisions: an engine jacket water heater is required on Level 1 systems where ambient temperature drops below the minimum of the engine manufacturer, and is recommended rather than required on Level 2 systems.

Level 1 means a power failure could endanger life, which covers hospitals, fire protection, and egress lighting. Level 2 covers loads where an outage is less severe.

Two maintenance clauses follow from the same standard. Verification of the heater is a monthly task under §8.3.4, with element function treated as critical: confirm it is holding temperature and check for leaks.
